When your girlfriend announced she was getting married, did you want to scream from the rooftops? Squeal until everyone across Sydney knew? Keep on yelling until she truly understood just how excited you were for her? Well, you’ve got the answer for you – Karaoke.
We’ve organised our fair share of hen’s parties over the years. In fact, we’ve lost count of just how many there’s been – all we know is that it’s in the thousands. During that time of planning and executing unmissable events, we’ve learned a thing or two about what it takes to put on one heck of a hens celebration. While the perfect party looks different for every person, there is one fool-proof activity that will keep everyone happy – karaoke.
And when it comes to belting out a tune in front of a room packed with your nearest and dearest, you’re truly spoiled for choice in Sydney. The city is home to a stack of karaoke bars that are all waiting for you to come and bust a lung or break hearts on the private dance floor.
Beyond having a room, a sound system and a song list, there’s a certain special something that’s needed to take a mediocre karaoke bar to an absolutely sensational, stand-out one. In the name of your friend’s hen’s party, don’t be fooled if you think you’re settling for anything less than incredible.
To save you the hard yards of doing the research yourself, we’ve put together a handy guide that outlines the top 5 karaoke bars in Sydney. So if you’re looking for somewhere to sing your favourite tunes until you’re empty-lunged and sweaty-browed, you’ll want to read on.
How does a night of free snacks and old-school karaoke in the heart of the city sound? If you’re anything like us, this joint is about to become one of your new favourites. Despite being located above George Street, this karaoke bar steers away from the usual glitz of the CBD and embraces a more minimalistic style. But so long as you’re a-okay to abandon high-tech devices for the night, you’re in for the trade.
The novelty of having to flip through an actual song book is kind of charming, as is the oversized Game Boy-style remote that’s wrapped in plastic with handwritten buttons to queue songs. If you’ve got a boisterous group celebrating the bride-to-be, you’ll fit right in because the sound system is loud, and the reverb is intense. Be sure to have a camera handy to capture the woman of the hour doing her thing.
Address – 636 – 638 George Street, Sydney
Lantern by Wagaya is a relatively new addition to the Sydney karaoke scene, but where it lacks in history, it exceeds in sparkle. The rooms are like little mod capsules, all fitted with mirrored oval tables and a plush, light olive lounge setting. The tunes on offer all hit the mark, and a special mention should be made for the extensive number of Lady Gaga ballads and Rihanna numbers on offer.
This is also a great option if you’ve got some party-goers that aren’t too keen on the whole karaoke idea (we know, they don’t know what they’re missing out on!). You can order tequila shots and hot chips without even getting up from the lounge, or take your pick from the extensive Japanese menu on offer.
Address – 591 George St, Sydney
Get the party together and make your way to Chinatown – the middle of Dixon Mall to be specific. Once you’re here you’ll find an unobtrusive door that leads to an elevator, where you’ll then be taken to a Blade Runner style Shanghai wine bar. It’s like a scene from a sci-fi film!
Once you’re inside, you’re in for a proper rager of a night! With one-way mirrors in the private rooms, touchscreen tabletop games and so many over the top statues, your senses will be in absolute overdrive! When you add in an uplifting group rendition of an old classic, it’s sure to be a night you’ll all remember for years to come.
Address – 1/63 Dixon St, Haymarket
Another popular destination for travellers and locals alike is Echo Point. Those that have been there will fondly describe its worn ‘80s aesthetic as careworn, like a favourite coat and we’d have to agree with them. Just like its welcoming style, the staff running the joint are just as friendly and keen to ensure you have the very best time!
The biggest selling point of Echo Point is undoubtedly its song list. The venue has Sydney’s greatest and largest range of tunes, hands down. They’re all keyboard backing tracks, which means you can adjust the pitch and tempo to suit as well. If your woman wants to prove she’s got what it takes, this is the place for her.
Address: Basement/262 Pitt Street, Sydney
We couldn’t wrap up our top 5 picks without including K1 Karaoke Lounge. This collection of 18 rooms up a few grungy flights of stairs off Dixon Street offers big spaces, comfy lounge chairs and a super easy to use music system.
While the song selection is pretty good, it’s the sound system that really sets this place apart. You can have up to 4 microphones per room, and up to 40 people in your room too. There’s also a bar on site so you can make a toast to a special day right around the corner.
Address: Level 2/31/37 Dixon Street, Haymarket
